Story time @ the National Library of Australia

Writer: Tracey HawkinsTracey Hawkins

I'm sure people who were visiting the NLA were wondering who the loud, talkative group of people were that filled the cafe.

It was just a gathering of children's authors and illustrators who were rather excited to see each other. We had much to discuss, news to swap, we had the chance to show off our new books, and sign our new books to friends.

In case you didn't know, authors are excellent with words of course—so we are brilliant talkers.

On this day our local chapter of Society of Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) had gathered for a special tour of the NLA's newest exhibition Story time Australian Children's Literature.

Author & Illustrator, Stephanie Owen Reeder, has written, and compiled a companion book for the exhibition. And what an amazing exhibition it was. For me, it was a walk through my childhood with the words and illustrations of famous books I loved as a child.

The exhibition covers a vast period of Australian publications from 1910-2019. There's everyone's favourite books in the collection from the past 100 years. So pop along and have a look. Take Great-Grandparents, Grandparents, little kids and all those in between as the exhibition has something for all the generations.

Of course we purchased our copies of Stephanie's book to take home and read. And I may have bought a few more books from the book shop while I was there. You can never have too many books to read :)

This is only half of all those who attended. We had to go in two groups.
